Up to 100 millimetres of rain could fall on the Island’s west coast as an atmospheric river settles over B.C.’s south coast.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued rainfall warnings Saturday morning for west and east Vancouver Island. Up to 100 millimetres of rain could fall on the Island’s west coast as an atmospheric river settles over B.C.’s south coast, while the east coast between Nanoose Bay and Fanny Bay could see 50 mm.
“Periods of rain will gradually intensify to heavy rain this evening and continue through Sunday,” says the warning. “Total rainfall amounts near 100 mm are expected over west Vancouver Island. Exposed coastal regions will also see southwest winds of 50 km/h gusting to 70 tonight.”Environment Canada is warning that the heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
A special weather statement remains in effect for other parts of east Vancouver Island, along with the inland and north Island, Greater Victoria and the southern Gulf Islands. The season’s first atmospheric river arrived on Thursday, knocking out power to more than 18,000 homes and causing dangerous driving conditions.
Strong southeast winds gusting to 60 km/h are expected in the Strait of Georgia Saturday night and Sunday morning. Members of the public are asked to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
