Rain pounded the San Francisco Bay Area overnight and into the morning, bringing minor flooding to urban areas and making for a messy commute on roads. More rain, thunderstorms and hail are expected on Tuesday as a cold front sweeps across Northern California. "Everything transpired as expected," Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Monterey office, said."A heavier band of rain and even some thunderstorms moved through the Bay Area overnight and are continuing to move through the South Bay and into the East Bay this morning. It feels like a winter storm."
Heavy downpours flooded streets early this morning; Gass said the most reports were coming from San Jose and Oakland. KCBS Radio reported that the Westbound I-980 off-ramp at Jackson Street in Oakland was flooded early this morning. The weather service issued a"Rain showers early this morning have created some roadway flooding issues," the weather service warned.
Gass said there several reports of lightning spread throughout the Bay Area overnight and more strikes are possible today. The strongest storm cells were off the coast over the Pacific early Tuesday, with winds whipping up ocean waters and bringing the potential for funnel clouds. The weather serviceThe more concentrated heavy band of rain will be exiting the Bay Area later this morning.
