A short but intense rain in Nanaimo Monday night led to slick roads and multiple collisions around the city.

Nanaimo RCMP said two single-vehicle incidents were reported, with both vehicles sustaining significant damage and ending up in nearby ditches, but that there were no significant injuries.

According to police, the first incident was reported at about 8:30 p.m. in the 3800-block of Jingle Pot Road. Witnesses told officers they saw a Ford F-150 rollover and come to a stop in a nearby ditch. A few minutes later, a person was seen running away from the crash.Police were able to track down the registered owner of the truck, but were unable to determine who was driving at the time of the crash. While attending, police found a 21-year-old man standing on the side of the road next to a BMW that was in the ditch.

The man was relatively uninjured but was complaining about a sore chest. He told officers he would get checked out at the hospital and a tow truck was called for his vehicle.“When the rains come after long periods of drought, the rain mixed with oils on the roads can make for unpredictable slippery conditions. The best advice we can offer is to reduce your speed according to the weather conditions and to be extra cautious when taking corners” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.
