However, the schools will still be allowed to raise their fees for domestic, out-of-province students by up to five per cent .

Tuitions were decreased by 10 per cent during the 2019-2020 school year amid a number of changes to the way OSAP issues grants and loans. One such change saw the end of a program that covered full tuition costs for students from low-income families.A group representing Ontario’s colleges expressed disappointment with the extension on Thursday.

“It’s very disappointing we weren’t given the flexibility to respond to escalating cost pressures,” argued Linda Franklin, president and CEO of Colleges Ontario. “Tuition isn’t a barrier for college students in Ontario. We could have increased tuition while continuing to ensure college education remains affordable and accessible to all qualified students.

“Our postsecondary institutions and research institutes are important sources of job creation, skills training, research, innovation and commercialization, making them leading contributors to our overall economic growth,” said Jill Dunlop, Minister of Colleges and Universities.
