Workers at Quebec 's English CEGEPs are reporting confusion and challenges as they help students navigate the province's new language law , Bill 96, which took effect at the start of the current school year. The law mandates that students take an additional three French courses, on top of the two already required, significantly expanding the number of possible course combinations to 115 from just over a dozen previously.
Academic advisors and non-teaching staff, represented by the Fédération du personnel professionnel des collèges, are struggling to comprehend the changes, leading to concerns about students' academic progress. Éric Cyr, head of the union, expressed worry that students might discover course deficiencies near graduation due to the new language requirements. He highlighted the potential for students to miss out on essential courses taken in English before the law's implementation. Dayle Lesperance, an academic advisor at Champlain College and a local union president, pointed out the added anxiety for anglophones, new immigrants, and Indigenous students who may not be fluent in French. Students like Sasha Allen and Savannah Mangerpan at Champlain College have shared their experiences, describing the extra French courses as a challenging and unexpected hurdle. Kenneth Clarence, the president of the student union at Dawson College, criticized the lack of government funding to support this transition, arguing that post-secondary institutions require more resources to effectively implement the changes. While Quebec's Education Ministry stated that they have allocated resources like workshops and French language support centers, with an estimated $8 million budget specifically for English CEGEPs, the concerns about insufficient support and potential academic setbacks for students persist.
