The Quebec model has been a point of contention amid concerns that Alberta's pension reserves could be at risk through politically-driven investment.
Alberta Finance Minister Nate Horner speaks to the media at a news conference in Calgary, Thursday, June 29, 2023. A spokesperson for Horner says the proposal to have a future Alberta pension plan mirror the controversial Quebec investment model remains on the table for consideration — four days after Horner announced it was off the table.
“The engagement panel will hear whether Albertans want that mandate to be solely focused on maximizing returns or whether it should have a dual mandate that also focuses on economic development in Alberta, similar to Quebec’s pension manager.”“We want to make it clear that investment decisions will not be made by the government,” said Johannsen.
The issue of political interference in an Alberta pension plan came up Monday night when the pension engagement panel, led by former provincial treasurer Jim Dinning, heard from callers in the first of five telephone town hall sessions.
