Grand Chief Serge Simon blocks entrance to Oka provincial park
Kanesatake Grand Chief Serge Simon blocked the entrance to Oka provincial park Wednesday morning to send a clear message to park administration, government and the public that he will do everything in his power to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community. The park officially opened Wednesday.
During Wednesday afternoon’s press briefing, Quebec’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Security Geneviève Guilbault said discussions were underway with Simon, Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks Pierre Dufour, Minister Responsible for Indigenous Affairs Sylvie D’Amours and the regional health authority.
Simon said keeping COVID-19 at bay was a matter of life and death. He said 50 per cent of the community has underlying health conditions, including a high rate of diabetes. He has two daughters who are immunocompromised and was told by a doctor that if they become infected with COVID-19, the chance of surviving is slim.
“ asking,” Quevillon told Presse Canadienne, “that these roadside checks be withdrawn for several weeks and we sent a lawyer’s letter last Monday to the Sûreté du Québec and the Ministère des Transports to have them withdrawn.”
