Moments before the San Antonio Brahmas kicked off Saturday’s game, coach Hines Ward was asked on the ESPN2 broadcast which of his players most needed to step up. He offered a very direct answer: quarterback Jack Coan.
Coan responded with his best game of the season, completing 25 of 31 passes for a season-high 302 yards with a touchdown to lift San Antonio to a 25-23 win against the Orlando Guardians, keeping the Brahmas’ playoff hopes alive and delivering the team’s first win in the Alamodome after an 0-3 start at home.
Jacques Patrick kept the offense churning on the ground, rushing 20 times for 80 yards and a touchdown while adding five catches for 50 yards. Orlando’s K.D. Cannon lined up as a gunner on the left side, motioned across the formation at the snap and ran a wheel route up the right sideline. Cannon leapt over the Brahmas’ Kameron Kelly to pull in the catch around San Antonio’s 40-yard line, then sprinted to the 4-yard line before finally being tracked down.San Antonio reached the end zone for just the Brahmas’ fourth offensive touchdown in the past six games by cashing in a two-minute drill before the end of the half.
