Published: Aug. 16, 2024, 6:01 p.m."At 5:48 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located 8 miles northeast of Crandall, or 11 miles west of Butler, moving southeast at 5 mph," according to the weather service. "Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees."The weather service adds, "For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
Lightning can follow conductive pathways, and these precautions reduce the risk of electrical surges. After the last lightning strike or thunderclap, wait at least 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activities. When indoor shelter isn't available: Camping in an open setting during a thunderstorm is strongly discouraged. If you have no alternative, set up camp in a valley, ravine, or other low-lying areas. It's crucial to note that a tent provides no protection against lightning.
When stopping by the roadside is your only option, position your vehicle as far off the road as possible, ideally beyond guardrails. Keep your headlights on and activate emergency flashers to alert other drivers of your position.
