Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's second-weekend drop continues a bad MCU box office trend that began in Phase 4. Can Marvel fix it in Phase 5?
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's box office performance means Phase 5 continues a bad trend for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After usually being one of the last films in a Phase, the third Ant-Man movie was responsible for kicking off Phase 5. This came as it brought Kang the Conqueror to the forefront, exploring him in greater detail and introducing his variants as the main villains of the Multiverse Saga.
Quantumania’s Decline Continues Phase 4’s Bad Box Office Trend Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's box office decline in its second weekend is all-too-familiar after Phase 4 for the MCU. Marvel's efforts to continue the franchise after Avengers: Endgame have not been met with a similar fever, resulting in most of Phase 4's movies having massive second-weekend drops. Every single MCU Phase 4 movie had a second-weekend drop of at least 62.
Other pieces to the puzzle could be a feeling of Marvel fatigue and people deciding to stop following the story. Marvel Studios released over 15 movies and shows in less than two years, and that output level turned off several customers. Add in the fact that Avengers: Endgame gave some audiences a natural spot to stop following the franchise, and the MCU box office becomes more front-loaded with the hardcore fan base.
