One player Biakabutuka has mentored is rookie defenceman Marcus Kearsey. The Islanders, who open the playoffs with back-to-back road games against the Quebec Remparts on March 31 and April 1, traded up to draft Kearsey in the second round, 32nd overall, of the 2022 QMJHL Entry Draft. Kearsey has not disappointed, recording 29 points in 68 games in his rookie 16-year-old season – he just turned 17 on March 17.

Biakabutuka said his role changed this year going from a veteran-laden roster with championship aspirations to a youthful rebuilding team.
