SYDNEY — Cape Breton Eagles forward Jacob Newcombe was named the co-recipient of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League’s Paul Dumont Trophy as the league’s personality of the year.

The 19-year-old Newcombe’s nomination comes for his return to action on Jan. 18 after missing the first half of the 2023-24 season while battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.The Sambro, N.S., product produced 24 points in 26 games in his return and helped inspire the Eagles, who finished with the league’s fourth-best record in the second half of the season en route to a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings.

On Wednesday night, Newcombe set an Eagles franchise record for most points in a single playoff game with six – two goals and four assists – in an 8-5 win over Chicoutimi in Game 4.The fourth-year player had 14 points in 45 games with a +38 rating. He was forced to end his regular season on Feb. 3 to undergo treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Chouinard stayed close to the team and returned to the lineup for Game 3 of the club’s first-round playoff series with the Charlottetown Islanders on April 2.ADVERTISEMENT
