The Texans used quarterback Jeff Driskel on multiple third-and-short situations,...

Houston Texans defensive end Jonathan Greenard celebrates after stopping Indianapolis Colts running back Nyheim Hines short of a first down on a 4th and short during the first half of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, in Houston.Few would have expected the Texans to elevate third-string quarterback Jeff Driskel over Kyle Allen.

But that was the case Sunday as the Texans opted to go with the dual-threat quarterback against the Colts. The Texans used Driskel on multiple third-and-short situations, including one where he scrambled for a first down. The Texans were facing third-and-2 from the Houston 20-yard line late in the third quarter when Driskel turned a corner, running past a defender while barely keeping his feet in-bounds.

Though the drive didn’t result in a touchdown, it was critical for the Texans at that point because it helped extend a drive. “Whenever you can put someone in like that at quarterback, I mean he’s different than Davis , and the play that we ran, we just felt like he can give us a run-pass-option guy when you put him in,” Texans coach Lovie Smith said. “That was a big play for us when he came in.”

Driskel is currently on the practice squad and can only be elevated three times for gameday, unless he is signed to the active roster.
