A look at how the Canucks’ scouting staff prepares for the draft, two months out, plus updates on a handful of prospects.

With the Vancouver Canucks prepping for the NHL Entry Draft, and making the 10th overall pick on June 21 at Rogers Arena, we caught with the man who will compile all the team’s knowledge when it comes to the 2019 draft class.

Answer: : Yes we’re going to make that announcement right now. We’re very excited to have a top 10 pick. Now we’ve drawn some players together as similar and started to think of them in different ways, in nuances of how they can be separated from each other. A: Comparables are helpful, but these kids are all on different paths. It can be a bit of a dangerous thing to say a player is going to be similar to or is going to be this type of player.

A: It’s a strong draft so there’s certainly depth there. We’ve seen over the past couple years that the player we draft at our slot isn’t necessarily the player we had rated fifth or the player we had rated seventh . If we’re able to hit multiple needs, like we did last year, that’s the best-case scenario but sometimes we just have to look at what the strength of the draft is at that particular time.A: Draft day is obviously the most exciting because you truly get to add a player and be really excited about them.

Then it’s situational stuff: where does the coach use them, do they trust them, are they on the ice late when they’re down a goal, those types of scenarios. It’s important that we get players who fit our criteria as a Canuck, that they’re more than maybe just the fastest guy on the ice or the most skilled, there are a lot of details that go in to making this list.Vancouver Canucks prospect Jack Rathbone.JACK RATHBONEExceptional character, went into Harvard as a freshman, assimilated quickly, moved up to the first pair with Adam Fox, played really meaningful minutes in all situations. Played on the second power-play unit.
