Carter took a moment away from working on a new band, a series of pending releases of older recordings and a film to talk to Postmedia. Q: For someone who has always been prolific, you appear to have upped the work schedule even more than usual. Is this another case of the coming out of COVID creativity that seems to blossoming everywhere?: Not really. My music career of almost 50 years was put on hold for most the past 10 when — all in a row — my best friend and my mother passed, I had a very, very serious cycling accident, followed by major personal awakenings which lead to transitioning.
Q: ChromaNoise’s Hard is a far cry from your free jazz recordings as the Hip Hop Revisited video on your YouTube channel makes very clear. How did it develop?: If it isn’t the best thing I’ve ever done, it’s certainly as good as anything I did with NOW or any of my other projects. It came out of someone’s suggestion that me and spoken word artist Kendrick James try to do something more commercial, and we worked for two years from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
He wrote the lyrics based on the conversations we had about what we wanted to be discussing and I played musical architect. We then rented a house on Galiano and brought in a whole bunch of other people and recorded a version. The final mix came later, but there was a falling out with the money guy and the project took a bit longer to see light of day.Article content
