'I think it would be good if the people in the community could stop the navel-gazing a little bit, and enjoy what is available to us.'
Richard L’Abbé is the co-founder and long-time CEO of Med-Eng Systems, a major player in equipment for disposing of bombs and other explosives. He is devoting his retirement years to supporting engineering students and giving to the community. In June, he was appointed to the Order of Canada. It’s always been home for me. The company that I ran for 25 years was largely export-oriented.
I have been “blown up” 19 times. The first occurrences were during test series where we were detonating explosive charges in front of instrumented crash test dummies wearing a bomb suit and helmet. In the last such occurrences, I did live demos in France, Sweden, Switzerland, Egypt and Romania. I’ve been serving on a number of community boards, including the board of governors at the University of Ottawa, the board of directors at la Cité collégiale, the board of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, as well as other small boards. Once you’ve gained experience in your professional life, if you want to give back that’s really important, especially in the community where some of the experience you have might become a benefit.
The Makerspace is really cool because it allows students to go in and be creative to design things, and to produce some right there. They have 3D printers, some of which are producing very high-quality products. They have electronics, Arduino board-making equipment, they have sewing machines, they have a perfect little environment to sit there and be creative, and it doesn’t cost anything to the students; they can just go in there and produce some really cool stuff.
There are increasingly more women going into STEM, and that is a wonderful thing because they bring a totally different spin to solutions. To exclude them from the design of products that serve the community, in the past, was a little bit obtuse. We’re free to walk around the streets, we’re free to go into stores, the stores are well-stocked. We went through a pandemic, we saw what it’s like to have shortages. Well, there are a lot of countries around the world where they have chronic shortages, and in some places they can’t even get what they’re looking for. So we’re very blessed to be in Ottawa.Article content
