The region was dealt a bad hand by the weather; it was the wettest summer on record across much of the island. May’s Nova Scotia wildfires made travellers weary. The recovery from post-tropical stormalso continues. As a result, most businesses and attractions are reporting lower visitation compared to 2022.

The Cape Breton Post sat down with Smith — the CEO of Cape Breton tourism’s industry association and promoter — to discuss the unpredictable summer. It was also the second full season free of COVID-19-related restrictions, fuelling tourism traffic and recovery. Terry Smith is the CEO of Destination Cape Breton, the region's tourism industry association and marketer. Smith described the 2023 season as a whole as having"ups and downs" - visitation was up at some points of the year and down at others.
