During the Week of Beyoncé, in the year of our Lord 2022, we are crossing the velvet ropes with Houston Chronicle culture columnist, who focuses on Houston culture, families, social justice and race in one of the nation's most diverse regions.

I’m a native Houstonian and grew up in the Third Ward area, where I’m now raising my children and two dogs. I’ve wanted to be a journalist since I was 4 or 5. I also wanted to be a professional figure skater and tour the world. I did compete, then attended a college in Colorado, which had an ice-skating rink on campus. I later graduated from the University of Houston and became a professional skating coach while in school.

Also, I had always wanted to live outside of the country, and I got that chance when I was awarded a National Press Foundation fellowship to study Spanish in Mexico. I lived there for about seven months. When I returned, I worked in PR and even had my own firm. Q: Speaking of trust, that's certainly an asset when it comes to covering celebrities and gaining access to their lives. Do you think that's given you an advantage? Is there a memory that really stands out from your experience with the family?I also respected her privacy. I think because of that I was invited to their home , got interviews when other journalists couldn’t and sat at their dinner table where Miss Tina Knowles-Lawson made the best gumbo.
