Now Russia has launched an invasion of Ukraine, and the world is praising the Ukrainians for their bravery. Many of the statements from world leaders as the tanks rolled over the border sounded like a promise to the Ukrainians to come to their aid “in all probability.” And it might explain why thousands of people in Poland gathered outside the Russian embassy in Warsaw to protest the invasion of Ukraine.

The United States buys oil from Russia, too, about 672,000 barrels a day in 2021. The Wall Street Journal reports that “roughly half of the oil that the U.S. imports from Russia goes to the West Coast.” That’s because the West Coast is not connected to the largest U.S. oil field by a pipeline, so refiners bring in oil from overseas to supply West Coast needs.
