Vladimir Putin has reignited his battle with former billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky as Russia nears a decisive referendum in April, allowing Putin to remain in power until 2036.

Putin’s allegations allude to the alleged killing of Vladimir Petukhov, the mayor of Nefteyugansk, the town where Khodorkovsky's oil company, Yukos, was headquartered.

When Putin came to power in 1999, the former KGB agent and Russia’s foremost oligarch entrepreneur had differing views as to the direction in which Russia should travel. Unsurprisingly that year Khodorkovsky was arrested for tax evasion, embezzlement and fraud. In 2004 he appeared in court and in 2005 was found guilty on six of seven charges and jailed for eight years.

It will remain this way until it decays or is thrown away.A public vote on the constitutional changes that would allow Putin to navigate the two-term rule on 22 April this year. Putin is up for re-election in 2024, but remains yet to confirm whether he will participate.
