More state lawmakers are pushing "heartbeat" bills that ban abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy in a bid to trigger a Supreme Court decision overturningFour states have enacted such prohibitions — nearly all blocked by the courts — and the number is poised to grow in the coming days, with Georgia expected to sign a bill shortly.

In all, the heartbeat bills, which constitute some of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country, are among roughly 250 pieces of legislation across 41 states that aim to reduce access to the procedure. Separately, six states — including Kentucky on Tuesday — have already enacted laws that would automatically ban abortion in the event that the Supreme Court strikes downSix weeks after conception is a point at which women may not know they are pregnant.

“I’ve been in those hospital rooms when the heartbeat stops, unfortunately many, many times holding a loved one’s hand,” state Sen. Renee Unterman, a sponsor of the legislation and a former cardiovascular nurse, said on Friday before the bill passed the Georgia Senate. “Every time it gave me a better appreciation of life and the courage to defend the life of the unborn child.”
