NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio is leaving the door open to supporting the reclassification of municipal workers lost to the coronavirus as line-of-duty deaths — a distinction that would ensure stronger benefits for surviving relatives

After Sept. 11, fallen cops and firefighters were able to leave their families with three quarters of their salaries and full health benefits — more than they would have without the designation.

His union, Local 2507, is part of a separate pension system from that which manages benefits for firefighters, even though paramedics work for the FDNY. Nevertheless, the special status would grant relatives of EMTs more secure posthumous benefits — three years of the deceased worker’s final salary. The line-of-duty designation would free employees who continued to report to work after Covid-19 was first detected in New York City on March 1 from proving they contracted the virus on the job.

The paperwork, which would be filled out by those who became sick, reads: “As a member of the department, I have had numerous potential exposures to COVID19 during work activities. … Personal protective equipment was provided to me for responses to known or suspected COVID19 cases, but with community spread, the potential for exposure at any FDNY response or work activity is real and likely to have occurred.
