Sudbury.com first brought you Jack Cantin’s story three years ago when as a toddler, the first time he won the competition. Now five, the young golfer continues to develop his killer swing
The golf swing of five-year-old Jack Cantin will evolve, as he grows and matures, over time. For now, however, the five-year-old Sudbury area youth is more than happy to leave well enough alone.
Run by Linksters Academy at Wekiva Golf Club in Longwood, Florida, and requiring registrants to submit videos of their respective golf swing, the 2023 contest was judged by the likes of LPGA pro and 2013 British Open champion Stacy Lewis, PGA pro Sam Ryder and up and coming pro Alexa Pano. At the age of just two, a golf video of the northern lad went viral, with the senior kindergarten student at R.L. Beattie Public School now a little more talkative about some of what underlies the swing that appears to fit him like a glove.
While he has participated in a handful of nine-hole tournaments for kids that adjust course length to less or slightly less than a standard course, the reality is that it’s hard to take the kid out of the kid. “We’re not professional golfers by any means,” said Eric. “The trick with the golf swing is trying to let him own his own swing, without molding him too much – all while trying to keep the fundamentals.
“When I hit it straight, it stays straight,” said Jack. “But sometimes I don’t hit it straight and it goes crooked.”
