Mexico's Pumas UNAM defeated Canadian Premier League champions Cavalry FC 2-0 on Thursday, advancing to the Round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Substitute Guillermo Martinez scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 victory for Mexico 's Pumas UNAM over 10-man Cavalry FC on Thursday. This result eliminated the Canadian Premier League champions from the CONCACAF Champions Cup with an aggregate score of 3-2. Cavalry FC had aimed to complete the upset they initiated a week prior with a 2-1 win in Langford, British Columbia, during the opening leg of the first-round series.

After a challenging first half, Pumas finally breached Cavalry's defense in the 53rd minute. Martinez, finding space between two Cavalry defenders, powerfully headed home Ignacio Pussetto's cross, giving Pumas a 1-0 lead and a crucial away goal advantage. Martinez, who entered the game at halftime, doubled Pumas' advantage in the 74th minute with a well-placed shot from outside the penalty box that beat goalkeeper Marco Carducci. Cavalry FC endured several close calls before the halftime break, with the score remaining 0-0. A video review led to Cavalry winger Jay Herdman being sent off in first-half stoppage time for a reckless challenge on Pablo Bennevendo. Carducci effectively saved Pussetto's subsequent penalty kick. Earlier, a red card for Cavalry midfielder Charlie Trafford was downgraded to a yellow after video review. Despite possessing 77 percent of the ball and outshooting Cavalry 14-0 in the first half, Pumas only managed one shot on target, prompting some frustration from the crowd at Estadio Olimpico Universitario. Forge FC also exited the tournament on Tuesday, suffering a 5-0 aggregate defeat after a 3-0 loss against CF Monterrey. The Mexican side will now face either the Vancouver Whitecaps or Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa in the Round of 16
