Puerto Rican women on the front lines paid civicnation
People around the world have heard the news—in July, Puerto Ricans took to the streets by the hundreds of thousands demanding that the Governor Ricardo Roselló resign. And he did.
So, what happened to motivate approximately half a million people to storm the streets of Puerto Rico? On July 10, Puerto Rico’s former Secretary of Education Julia Keleher was arrested by the FBI, most notably, for allegedly steering $13 million in federal education funds to unqualified contactors. This after she led a two-year campaign which ultimately closed more than 400 public schools , sparking island-wide outrage.
On July 11, the Center of Investigative Journalism released all 889 pages of that chat. People were appallaed by the language used against women in the chat, and the leaders’ unabashed sexism was just the tip of the iceberg. Among the leaked messages were disgusting homophobic slurs, plots to mobilize the media in favor of the administration, and comments trivializing the aftermath of Hurricane Maria—which may have horrified Puerto Ricans the most.
