For the second time in a row, we paid to determine the gender of these workers by submitting their first names to Gender-API.com. Results with less than a 95 per cent confidence score from API were excluded, so our analysis is based on reliable gender information for two-thirds of the names in the database.Article content
The salaries captured in the database are from 2020-2021, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, when more women than men stayed home to care for children or elderly parents after schools and services closed. The database shows that, in addition to not being hired for influential jobs at the same rate as men, women in the public service also make less money. Women represent 60 per cent of workers earning between $75,000 and $100,000, but just 37 per cent of those making more than $250,000 annually.Earlier this year,that shows, in 2021, female B.C. residents earned, on average, 14 per cent less an hour than men.
