The seventh wave of the pandemic is being fuelled by Omicron subvariants that are considerably more contagious than earlier ones and better at evading immunity.
“To minimize morbidity and mortality in Ontario, as well as societal disruption, current public health efforts could be augmented in response to the increasing epidemiological trends.” The BA.4 and BA.5 variants are highly transmissible and “could lead to high levels of community transmission in the absence of public health measures,” the brief said.Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, at his last media conference a week ago, said he had no plans to recommend additional public health measures.The wave will be “kept in check” by high vaccination rates and the availability of anti-viral treatments, he said.
