Of the current inventory, 8.4 million will expire in the next 90 days, but the government has ongoing contracts to continue to bring in more doses

Currently, all provinces have opened up third doses of the vaccine to everyone in their population, but have been more restricted with fourth doses. Some provinces restrict them to people over age 50, some have opened them up wider. Alberta has the most restrictions currently, with the fourth shot only available to people over 70, or those who are immunocompromised.

Both Moderna and Pfizer are developing Omicron specific vaccines that are expected to better target the COVID variant that has become dominant this year. Moderna has submitted its vaccine for review by Health Canada. Dr. Howard Njoo, Canada’s deputy chief public health officer, said a decision on a fourth shot is ultimately up to individual Canadians and they should listen to their doctors.

“Why we keep stressing about the three doses is that from what the science has shown us is that certainly with vaccination, it’s a more controlled way of getting your immunity up.”Article content
