ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — More than 30 years since then Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Clyde Wells informally promised that government would create a system of protected areas, the province is finally making good.
The public can now consult on the first four of 10 proposed protected areas in the province — Ripple Pond, Halls Gullies, Conne River North and Facheaux Bay. How much do we love thee, Newfoundland? Not enough to protect its biodiversity, as scientists warn we're almost at the point of no return, submitting comments to interactive online maps or calling 709-632-0843 for Ripple Pond and Halls Gullies or 709-636-4836 for Conne River North and Facheaux Bay. Consultations for the remaining six proposed areas — Cape Norman, Watts Point Extension, Stony Lake, Rodney Pond, Cape St. George and Indian Arm Brook — are promised over the next two years.It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
