Const. Steve Simmons is one of three subject officers in a complaint by a father and son from Paradise
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSST. JOHN'S, N.L. — An RNC Public Complaints Commission hearing got underway in St. John’s this week for the third police officer accused of professional misconduct in connection with the arrest of a father and son six years ago.
Simmons and two other officers — Const. Isabella Wagner and Bernard Morgan, who is no longer a member of the RNC — were the subject of a Public Complaints Commission complaint by Dennis and Zackary Ball, who allege they were unlawfully arrested after an altercation with police that also saw Zackary assaulted and a window of their home deliberately smashed.
Police say Dennis had driven dangerously through an accident scene in Paradise, yelling obscenities at RNC officers and pulling a U-turn around the scene, increasing speed while driving away. Simmons pursued Dennis in a police vehicle, following him home. The two others arrived after Simmons used his “officer down” button to request backup.
Morgan is seen in the video striking Zackary in the head as he and Wagner escort him, handcuffed, to a police vehicle. Morgan told the hearing he had instructed Wagner to break a pane in the patio door of the home after Zackary refused to come outside. Zackary alleged he was made to lie face down on the broken glass while Morgan handcuffed him.
