Melissa Schlick, an interdisciplinary arts student in her final year, said she’s upset but not surprised.“To have something that I’ve worked on for months be destroyed in just two days . . . I was devastated.” Schlick’s piece is not the only one to be affected by people in the park. Amna Kurtic, a fourth-year interdisciplinary arts student, said her painting was also vandalized.
“What I was trying to portray with my painting was peace, and what I got was war,” Kurtic said in an interview.Amna Kurtic stands next to her piece, One With Nature. - Mathieu HebertInstead of scrapping the artwork, Schlick made use of the remaining fragments, relocating them to a nearby stump. Now, the tower seems as though it is part of the stump, perhaps even more site-responsive than it was before.“I think I needed this to happen to understand what public art means to people. . . .
