With the holidays just around the corner, Seasonal Affective Disorder and other external stressors can compound mental health problems for many people. For first responders and other public safety personnel , those conditions may be exacerbated by high-stress, high-pressure jobs that can mean life or death on a day-to-day basis.
“Clinically it’s relevant to the population I treat, but academically I’ve always had a keen eye toward ICBT,” says Dr. Schneider. “A lot of people don’t realize ICBT has a long history around the world in terms of being implemented and studied.”After his post-doctorate at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton — which included training in the treatment of PTSD among various clients, including first responder and military populations — Dr.
“It can be hard to access quality mental healthcare, because there may be only one or two therapists who serve that whole region,” says Dr. Schneider. “ have really busy schedules, and the idea of taking an hour off every week to go to someone’s office to receive treatment might not be feasible.” “Our first responders are there and need to be there to do this important work, so that can mean a lot of extra stress,” says Dr. Schneider, noting how many PSP members can struggle to balance personal and professional obligations this time of year. “We know that when we’re busy, one of the best things we can do is make sure we’re checking in with ourselves and engaging in self-care.”
