The Oct. 19 discussion saw Mi'kmaw health-care experts and provincial health system representatives discuss the pressing challenges facing First Nations individuals needing mental health support. Among the topics discussed were Mi'kmaq in mental health leadership roles, suicide prevention, language support and the province's response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's mental health call to action."There is no plan.
Rudderham mentioned that many living in rural Mi'kmaw communities are often forced to use hospital emergency rooms to find mental health care, emphasizing the importance of community-based solutions. She says Mi'kmaw communities are the best equipped to make their own decisions about delivering mental health care.
"It would be community members responding in the community, not just sitting at the health centre. It's going to the family members, going to friends, seeking out those close ties to the person who attempted or committed suicide," said Julian."They can't respond in a way that our own people respond to each other in a crisis."
