The province’s independent COVID-19 Science Advisory Table will be folded into the arm’s-length government agency Public Health Ontario.

, formed nearly two years ago to provide scientific advice to the province based on pandemic data, is being folded into the arm’s-length government agency Public Health Ontario.

In a release Thursday, science table co-chair Steini Brown said making PHO the new and permanent home of the table provides an “opportunity for the table to continue making important contributions to Ontario’s response to COVID-19, as well as continuing to foster the collaboration between government, public health and academic partners.”

The table’s contributions to regular modelling presentations at Queen’s Park became must-watch events. Schwartz said the table’s mandate is a good fit with PHO, which itself was established as an independent scientific agency to provide advice to government. NDP health critic France Gélinas lauded the table as a “great help” through the pandemic, but said folding it into PHO “will be a step backwards in the level of trust that people have into public health and public health directors at a time when we’re entering the sixth wave.”
