HALIFAX, N.S. — The provincial government is setting aside more than $400K over three years to launch a new coastal protection co-ordinator position within the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities.

Expected to start in June, the co-ordinator will support the province and municipalities during the implementation of specific actions from, the Future of Nova Scotia's Coastline plan, the protection effort announced in February.“Municipal leadership and action is critical as municipalities know their communities best and are the level of government responsible for zoning, land-use planning and building permits," said Timothy Halman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

"Climate change response requires all hands on deck and the Province has committed to working lock-step with municipalities on coastal protection and supporting them.” The province also announced another $3 million in funding for coastal protection programs, which includes $1.6 million for flood-line maps and climate change adaptation workshops, co-ordinated by the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities. The government plans to increase the percentage of protected coastline from 13.1 to 20 by 2030.
