ICYMI: Province extends appointment of supervisor for beleaguered Chestermere council ableg abpoli
Municipal Affairs Minister Rebecca Schulz lengthened the term of official administrator Douglas Lagore — who has the power to quash any council resolution — until March 31 “to ensure the continued supervision of the municipality until after the public meeting to present the results of the inspection process,” said the minister’s chief of staff, Alex Puddifant.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
The province installed Lagore in September through to the end of January due to what then-minister Ric McIver called “increasing dysfunction” within council. The appointment came shortly after Mayor Jeff Colvin — backed by his majority voting bloc consisting of himself, deputy mayor Mel Foat and councillors Stephen Hanley and Blaine Funk — attempted to launch more than 100 code of conduct inquiries into his political foes, councillors Shannon Dean, Sandy Johal-Watt and Ritesh Narayan.
Council and some city officials — including city director Kim Wallace, a top-level administrator recentlyin relation to an alleged scuffle with an employee — met with Minister Schulz last week to discuss the municipal inspection.
