The province is throwing cold water on a request that it pay the full cost of 17 new paramedics in Ottawa for each of the next three years,
“We have said the problem is a hospital problem. We have engaged positively with hospitals to mitigate . Today we are extracting what is the province’s or the hospitals’ responsibility and saying the 17 we are asking for truly belong to the province,” said Poirier. “We are asking: Please pay your share.”
“As municipalities know, the land ambulance service grant is based on 50/50 cost sharing with the province. Should Mayor Sutcliffe or Ottawa city council want to increase their budget, the province will be there to match that request,” said the statement from Hannah Jensen, spokesperson for the minister of health.
Poirier said the dedicated offload nurses program is reaching the point of reduced returns because staffing shortages.
