Demonstrators across the US and beyond rally against Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his role in implementing government spending cuts under President Trump, fueled by concerns over anti-democratic practices and a rise in antisemitism.
Protesters rallied outside Tesla stores across the United States on Saturday, March 1, 2025, to voice their opposition to Elon Musk , the company's CEO, and his efforts to reduce government spending on behalf of President Donald Trump . The demonstrations, part of a growing wave of dissent towards Musk's influence in Washington, aim to discourage and stigmatize Tesla purchases.
Critics of both Trump and Musk, including liberal groups, hope to inflict economic damage on Tesla by organizing boycotts and encouraging people to divest from the company. The protests stem from Musk's leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency, established at Trump's behest, which has implemented drastic cuts to federal spending and workforce. Musk argues that Trump's victory granted him a mandate to restructure the U.S. government. Critics, however, contend that Musk's actions circumvent Congress's budgetary authority and potentially benefit his personal wealth through his involvement in other ventures like SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter).Over 50 demonstrations were planned across the US, with additional protests scheduled for later in March in England, Spain, and Portugal. Demonstrators gathered in cities like Tucson, Arizona; St. Louis; New York City; Dayton, Ohio; Charlotte; and Palo Alto, California. Some Tesla owners have reported their vehicles being vandalized with swastikas, raising concerns about a rise in antisemitism. Federal prosecutors have charged a woman in connection with vandalism at a Colorado Tesla dealership, which involved Molotov cocktails and antisemitic graffiti. The Boston demonstration featured a brass band and chants, with signs mocking Musk and DOGE. Protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the Trump-Musk administration and called for its reversal. In New York City, approximately 300 demonstrators protested, resulting in nine arrests. While Tesla's share price has fallen since Trump took office, it remains higher than a year ago. Musk's estimated net worth is $359 billion
