The judge allowed for another adjournment to allow Ibrahim Ali time to view the Crown’s case against him. The case has inflamed emotions because Ali is a Syrian refugee.
About two dozen people carried signs saying, “Hold Trudeau accountable” and, “No more victims” as they chanted “No bail!” outside a court hearing Tuesday for the man charged with the first-degree murder of Burnaby teen Marrisa Shen.
Prosecutor Daniel Port told court that the Crown’s disclosure of evidence against the accused was “substantially complete.” Ali, who wore prison reds in the prisoner’s box, listened to the proceedings with the help of an Arabic translator in front of a packed courtroom.The case has inflamed emotions since Ali was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in September 2018 at his Burnaby home, not far from where Marrisa’s body was found.
“It’s a good thing having people coming out to support the family and pay attention to the murder of Marrisa Shen,” she said. However “the mother does not want this to be political, but she wants to focus on the safety of women and children and especially women of colour.” Laura Lynn Thompson, who ran for the People’s Party of Canada in last month’s byelection in Burnaby South and plans to run again in the general election in October, said she was at the protest to draw attention to the circumstances of the teen’s death.
Marrisa was reported missing by her family after she failed to return home by 11 p.m. on July 18, 2017. Police launched a search, using GPS to track her phone. The girl’s body was found early the next morning in Central Park.
