Police blocked off the roads around the Knesset as lawyers, medical professionals, tech workers and thousands from all walks of life filled up buses and trains headed to Jerusalem. As crowds began forming outside the parliament, lawmakers broke into shouting matches over the two bills the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee is expected to approve. Smaller-scale protests are also planned throughout the day across the country.

The showdown comes as Israel is also struggling to control growing insecurity and violence in the occupied West Bank, which CIA Director William J. Burns warned earlier this month could escalate into a full-blown Palestinian uprising. More than 45 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers so far this year, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent, the highest rate of killings in years.
