B.C. improved its rebate program for the purchase of new EVs, but its incentive for used purchases falls short of proposed U.S. measures.
B.C. has been a leader in boosting the EV market in Canada with generous rebates on new cars and a provincial-sales-tax exemption that also saves consumers money on the purchase of used vehicles, said Joanna Kyriazis, manager of clean transportation programs at Clean Energy Canada.
Kyriazis said B.C.’s EV rebate program, which was raised to $4,000 from $3,000 on full-battery compact and full-sized cars up to $55,000, has helped increase new sales to 17 per cent of overall sales in B.C. during the first three months of the year. B.C. Finance Minister Selina Robinson included a PST exemption on the sale of EVs, including used cars, in the 2022 budget at the same time it renewed its rebate program on new cars.Article content
With Tuesday’s increase, B.C.’s rebate stacked onto a federal rebate of up to $5,000, now subsidizes purchases by up to $9,000. The change also expanded the rebates to minivans and pickup trucks up to a $70,000 value. “We were one of the largest retailers in Western Canada for used EV vehicles, we’d do one a day or two a day,” MacIver said. “And at this point, we just can’t keep them on our lots. We might have one that lasts a few days and then it’s gone.”
“They’re just not producing enough right now, that’s the biggest challenge we’re seeing,” MacIver said.
