That brings us to the planning. If you have your date and outfit set, there are a whole host of actions you're expected to take. Buying flowers and corsages , booking a limo, arranging photos — you get the idea. The day of the event is, of course, the main part of the ritual. There, you'll dance and party with your friends, hopefully making happy memories you can reflect on later in life. And, dancing and sharing memories is a form of bonding that is common in covens and esoteric initiations. During prom, you'll likely elect a prom court, which is the last step of the ritual. Voting to have two leaders take the dance floor while we honor them is certainly a form of ritual.
As the evening fades, and we go home to take off our dresses, suits, tuxedos, and make up, we realize that, in a way, we're one step closer to being initiated into adulthood. We have practiced the only form of ritual in America that mostly everyone is a part of. Prom can have high stakes and feel prescriptive — like you need this date or that dress. But, like any good ritual, it's always more fun when you bend the rules.
