Raine Maida on marriage, music and the Maritimes | SaltWireA privacy breach at the City of St. John’s on Oct. 31 compromised some personal information of 219 residents, but the city says a limited amount of information was stolen.

“The access was very limited,” Coun. Jill Bruce told SaltWire. “It's very serious at the same time, but very limited. It was just 219 residents and there were no email addresses or credit card numbers or anything like that accessed.” Bruce said the city has contacted all the residents who had information compromised, and reported the incident to the relevant provincial authorities, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Office.

The emailed response from the OIPC also said that, as in any privacy breach, affected individuals have the right to file a complaint to its office, and it will “assess the circumstances and any new information that may arise in deciding whether to investigate further.
