Prince Edward County adopts new housing plan

Prince Edward County is committing to a new plan for more housing.

Prince Edward County Council has voted unanimously to adopt the “7 in 7” plan to build more affordable housing. The 7 in 7 housing plan, developed by the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus, is a new strategy to tackle housing shortfalls across eastern Ontario by both having municipalities directly construct 7000 units of affordable rental housing over 7 years and by providing incentives to the private sector to construct an additional 21,000 units of housing.

The initiative is being lead by the EOWC, and is calling upon municipalities, federal and provincial government, first nations governments, and private sector entities to work together for a collaborative solution to the housing shortfalls facing the region. Wait times for community housing can range from 5 to 10 years across eastern Ontario due to the housing shortage, approximately 12,000 to 14,000 units are currently needed just to meet existing demand.
