Why would our governor undermine a system that serves the majority of Texas students?
member from Corpus Christi who is extremely conservative, introduced Abbott, saying he’s fought hard for Texas schoolchildren. But his lack of education funding and voucher fight has hurt public schools.
Our governor began with a list of unfounded accusations. The kind GOP leaders so often hurl, but never prove, to criticize public education. His claims: A history teacher taught her students to disrespect the American flag. A public school no longer recites the pledge. A special needs child didn’t receive help. Parents don’t know what books are in their children’s libraries or what they’re getting taught.
“The school curriculum is getting away from reading, writing, math and science and teaching things like a woke leftist, radical agenda that gets away from the fundamentals,” Abbott said. “Let me tell you. Schools are for education — not indoctrination.” Lawful policies could make schools accountable for Abbott’s concerns, if they’re true. And while Texas public schools are far from perfect, there are other ways to address flaws than providing vouchers to private schools. There are so many serious concerns, such as students afraid they willBut imagine how much worse the Texas educational experience might become if tax dollars are funneled to unaccountable private schools, many of them religious. Talk about opening the door to indoctrination.
