It was time for a new photo, but after going gray, I dreaded it.
At first columnist Nancy Preyor-Johnson dreaded a new photo showing her gray hair. Now, she is celebrating it.By now, you’ve noticed my new column photo. I’ve changed since I sat for the first photo about two years ago when I first joined the Express-News Editorial Board.
Norris took my photo again, but this time, minus the professional makeup because it felt plenty wasteful and a little vain. The photos looked almost the same. When I was 15, I was thrilled to sit for a Glamour Shots session for my quinceañera invitation. I remember feeling more and more beautiful with each layer of makeup, hair teasing and pose. But when I saw them, I thought, “Huh? That doesn’t really look like me.”
In my 30s, people told me I looked younger than my age. In my 40s, not so much. I’m not sure when exactly it changed, although I have ideas of why.I had a hysterectomy in June 2020 and since then, I’ve battled surgical menopause and the myriad disruptive mental and physical challenges that come with it. At some point, my hair started falling out in clumps.
