“The girl is obviously a trained dancer so I wondered why she was offering these private dances in her apartment. Then I wanted to know why her mother had altered these dances to make them more seductive. Lastly, I wanted to know why the blind man had come for a private dance when he couldn’t actually see it. When I started working on the play, I didn’t have the answers but that’s how I work. It’s only when I don’t have answers that I know I have a play.
“I had been to dance bars but I’d never been to a private dance show until Bombay Black was playing in Bombay. We went to see a young woman who was a remarkable dancer. She danced in a small room that was separated by a curtain from where she lived. It was a sensual dance but also so beautiful. It was what I had imagined for my play.”Article content
