Wildly popular, Tony Award\u002Dwinning Canadian musical Come From Away tells the story of how one Canadian town stepped up during 9/11 attacks.
Bass was the crazy kid who, from the time she was eight, insisted she was going to be a commercial airline pilot when that was not considered a career for women. When she did get her pilot’s licence, the only job she could get was flying corpses between cities for a mortician. Eventually, Bass became American Airlines’ first female pilot but she met intense resistance from the male pilots who felt she should be serving them drinks, not navigating beside them.
“I remember the stories my mother told about how difficult it was for her in the ‘70s and ‘80s and the resistance she came up against. That’s a world that seems so foreign to young women today,” says Aubrey, who inherited her mother’s desire to chase the seemingly impossible. “I’ve always gone after things that were a little impossible. For me, coming to New York was an exciting case of coming to a bigger fish bowl. It was a bit scary but that appealed to me and my sense of adventure.”
Bass recalls that “in the first five minutes of the show, the actress playing me rolls out of her chair. She’s dressed in my uniform. She takes out her phone, dials and says ‘Tom I’m OK.’ My husband buried his head in his hands and began to cry and then so did I. We kept on crying so I’m sure we missed a good 75 per cent of that performance.
