'Pretty incredible': Calgary Stampede sets new Day 1 attendance record yyc
The Stampede announced it had set an all-time Day 1 attendance record Friday, July 7, with a staggering 164,939 people entering the grounds. On day two of the event daily attendance hit 138,781, with the Stampede’s two-day total sitting at 339,467. Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley said he’s thrilled to see the event break the first-day record for a second consecutive year, and hopes it’s a sign of things to come.“I have to give credit to our volunteers and our staff for creating a better layout this year. It actually felt better on the park yesterday than day one last year.”
A record attendance for the entire Stampede is a high bar, Cowley said, with the centennial celebration’s 1.4 million entries probably out of reach. “But at this point, looking at the weather and the ticket sales, I’m confident that we’ll surpass last year’s 1.2 and maybe even get close to 1.3.”
