showing a fallow deer caught in a net has sparked public outrage, causing Parks Canada to temporarily stop phase two of the eradication project.
“The people in Ottawa or the ones in Parks Canada really betrayed the trust of the W̱SÁNEĆ people,” said Hereditary Chief and W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership community engagement coordinator Eric Pelkey.Pelkey understands the public’s concerns about the well-being of the deer but also argues that the animals were already marked for extermination in phase two.
Pelkey and many project partners are meeting next week to come up with a new plan on how to complete phase two. Pelkey is hoping for a more traditional method.
